In 1989, on the Penn State trip, Laura Hamm earned the dubious distinction of being the only Pep Band Managing Bored Member in history to be supspended from travel for public drunkenness. While admirably maintaining her sobriety for the greater part of the trip, Ms. Hamm was indulging her lush-like tendencies, safely sequestered away in one of the hotel rooms, after everyone had gotten settled in, and official business was (apparently) concluded for the evening. Unfortunately, she had the simple bad luck to run into AD liaison Kim Record as she was weaving her way down the hallway toward her room, at the end of an, ahem, long evening. And more unfortunately, Ms. Record seized upon the chance meeting as an opportunity to discuss departure times, meeting schedules, etc. Needless to say, it took Record about .00005 seconds to catch wind of the "brewer's breeze" on Laura's breath, and to interpret her uncomprehending visage and gutteral attempts at verbal communication.
Hamm's peers on the Bored were forced, by political considerations, to suspend her travel privileges for one trip.
Interestingly, the Pep Band was blessed with a Second Hamm Coming, with the arrival of younger sister Cari in 1991. And, interestingly, both Hamms ended up serving on the Managing Bored, dating the Pep Band Director, and undergoing massive personality changes as a result of one or the other (or both) of those activities.
Cari has yet, to her credit, to run into Kim Record in a Pennsylvania hotel corridor while blind-staggering drunk.
